As a architectural designer Marcel van Wees (1975) has two decades of experience in retail design and design for public space. In that role he worked on a variety of projects where he witnessed the shift to a more balanced way of dealing with materials and their reusability. Apart from day to day architectural projects, he is presently closely involved in the Ceuvel community in the north of Amsterdam.
A selection of design concepts for the urban realm includes outdoor furniture and diverse design solutions for public space
This self initiated project is rooted in Amsterdam's historic and naval surroundings. To this day many derelict boats can be found all over town gutted by rust & rain, quite often at the bottom of the canal or still barely hanging from a chain or rope. We give them a new life as urban furniture along the canals and transformed docks of Amsterdam
A very compact studio apartment is nonetheless kept spacious by placing a central compact bathroom with toilet, shower and bath. On top the double bed is easily accessible through the 3D stairblock. A combination of materials connects the bathroom with the adjacent kitchen. The bathroom still receives daylight from the opaque kitchen backwall. Big thanks to Solenne, for such an enjoyable project;-)
For a small house in Amsterdam Noord a kitchen was created with a secondary function as bookcase for a living area. Through the zig zag concept a clear division in functions is accomplished.
As part of a new strategy for this landscape park several robust wooden objects have been designed to fully experience the landscapes limited relief. On top of a sanddune we placed a heavy bench with a strong signature
Urban Interior Design is a design studio with a cooperative workplace in the heart of de Ceuvel in Amsterdam Noord. We care about the details, context driven creation is the key! We work together with our community in this temporary village of creativity where we are looking for new ways to use materials and integrate this in a variety of designs. From our former boat, now creative haven, we run a variety of projects and actively support the community with constructive and aesthetic design support for the village of boats. The studio is open for use by other initiatives and is often turned into a live music stage during our divers season programming at the Ceuvel.
